To progress from a learner driver license to a P1 license, you need to pass the Hazard Perception Test before you can sit the driving test.

Booking your Hazard Perception Test

You should book your HPT when you're close to being ready for the driving test. If you haven't passed the driving test within 15 months of passing the HPT, you'll need to sit the HPT again.

If you’re over 25 years old, you can take the HPT as soon as you have your learner license and feel ready.

If you’re under 25 years old, you can take the HPT after you've held your learner license for at least 10 months. However there is no pressure to do the test at 10 months, book it when you are ready.

About the Hazard Perception Test

The HPT is a computer-based touch screen test. It measures your ability to recognize potentially dangerous situations on the road and respond appropriately.

It aims to ensure you have enough hazard perception skills to prepare you for solo driving and progress to a P1 license.

There are 15 film clips in the test. You'll be given two clips to practice before the test begins.

The test questions and situations focus on the common crash types for NSW provisional drivers. The test uses real traffic situations and each clip asks you to touch the screen, when you would slow down, overtake or turn at an intersection.

Languages other than English

The HPT is available in English, Arabic, Chinese, Croatian, Greek, Korean, Serbian, Spanish, Turkish and Vietnamese.

A free interpreter service is available to people who need to take the test in other languages. Please call 13 22 13 to arrange an interpreter.

Support for special needs or learning difficulties

If you have trouble understanding or reading the questions, our staff can assist by reading questions to you, and explaining the test questions.

An audio version of the test (where you listen to the questions through headphones) is also available, in all of the above languages.

How to study for the test

To help you pass the HPT, read the Hazard Perception Handbook and try to apply this knowledge in your driving. Building your hazard perception skills will help you pass the HPT and avoid the most common crash types.
